This week's #VoiceMoneyTimeOrTalent entry is the Forestry and Fire Recruitment Program. Many of California's wildfires are fought by inmates making as little as $1 per hour. California recently passed a bill allowing formerly incarcerated firefighters to petition the courts to dismiss their convictions after completing their sentences, but this does not mean the path is easy. The Forestry and Fire Recruitment Program, created by formerly incarcerated firefighters, works with the State of California to provide a bridge between formerly incarcerated wildland firefighters and California's forestry fire labor force through "pre-release inreach services, post-release training, job coaching, and a transitional employment pre-apprenticeship program." With COVID causing a release in inmates, reducing the number of inmate firefighters, on top of the worst fire season on record, this organization is as important as ever. Please consider supporting this organization with you #money and #voice.
More about the organization:
Mission: The Forestry and Fire Recruitment Program (FFRP) is a nonprofit organization that provides career support to formerly incarcerated firefighters and those currently incarcerated in California’s Conservation Camps; who are interested in careers in the Wildland and Forestry sector. FFRP was developed in direct response to the growing need for wildfire-related personnel. Our mission is to increase wildfire personnel from non-traditional and underrepresented communities, providing them the training, skills, resources, and experiences needed to secure gainful employment.
