Celebrate the Day of Ancestors: Diaspora Dialogues This Sunday at 2pm!

This month, LA Commons is kicking off our summer trek across the African diaspora with a “visit” to Brazil. In celebration of ten years of Day of the Ancestors, ten artists - five local and five international - will engage in a dialogue about the role of creativity in moving us forward; and, in the process, they will showcase their artistic heritage for you to enjoy. We begin this journey in Bahia, the seat of Black culture in this large country, which during the transatlantic slave trade received more humans as cattle than any other place. So, they too struggle with the lingering impacts of this challenging period, but they also benefit from the amazing cultural legacy of those once in bondage, and their artists transmit a vitality renowned worldwide.

In the first conversation, you will meet two dynamic women leaders in the traditionally male dominated world of the drum. Hailing from Salvador, Bahia, percussionist, artist, and activist Viviam Caroline leads all-women Banda Dida, a percussion group (Bloco Afro) providing a platform for the empowerment of black women in Brazil. With a similar goal, Rene Fisher Mims founded S.H.I.N.E Muwasi, which, from a base at The World Stage in Leimert Park, inspires women to find strength and wisdom as performers on African drums. This conversation will be moderated by our own Dr. Giavanni Washington, Executive Director of Viver Brasil.

We invite you all to join us on Sunday, June 28, 2020 at 2pm.  Register below.

Viver Brasil is honored to be chosen to take part in KCET's Southland Sessions. (We're on TV!)

As artists navigate an uncertain future in this time of pandemic and protest, “Southland Sessions” aims to reconnect Angelenos to the vitality of its arts and culture scene, drawing creative communities together. Tune in on-air and online for up-close, virtual “sessions” across multiple disciplines — in music, dance, theatre, spoken word and poetry to name a few. Keep up-to-date on what's happening in arts and culture around town. Find resources and advice on how to navigate this rapidly changing world as an artist. Join in and see how the arts are essential to the shaping of a city.

In response to COVID-19, Viver Brasil reimagined Celebrating Samba, our signature family show, from our homes throughout the world.    Celebrating Samba takes audiences on a cultural journey to Salvador, Bahia with electrifying Afro Brazilian dance and music to experience a jolt of joyful color, thrilling rhythms, and communal celebration.

This on-demand performance is a narrated show that includes the royal orixá dances, riveting capoeira, joyful samba and Bahian Carnaval with live music!

UPCOMING: #VoiceMoneyTimeOrTalent

One of Viver Brasil's core values is combating anti-blackness and we have been having internal discussions about how to lean into this work.  One way is to leverage our small but mighty platform to lift up organizations that are actively organizing and working toward dismantling systems of white supremacy.

Our goal is two-fold:  First, we want to spread awareness of dedicated local and national organizations that are actively and effectively engaged in anti-racist work.  Second, we want to encourage our community to get involved by using their Voice, Money, Time or Talent to support and amplify organizations and causes that resonate with them!  (Shout out to Dr Michelle Ramos, ED of @AlternateROOTS and Past Board Chair of @danceusaorg, who captured the essence of the initiative in her talk last week at the Dance/USA Conference.  We respectfully turn her phrase Give your voice, money, time or talent into a hashtag!)

Every Sunday, starting June 28, 2020, you can check our newsletter for a weekly spotlight on service!
