Hot off the press from Salvador, Bahia!
Great dance news in Salvador! The city council has approved a motion introduced by City Council Member, Silvio Humberto, proclaiming October 12th as Dança Afro Day, in memory of Raimundo Bispo dos Santos, aka Mestre King, our most important Afro-Brazilian dance pioneer. Viva the legacy of Mestre King!
Raimundo Bispo Dos Santos, better known as Mestre King, is from Salvador, Bahia Brazil & was one of Brazils leading authorities in Afro-Brazilian dance and music forms and traditions. Mestre King was the first male to graduate from the Federal University of Bahia's Dance Department where he held both a bachelor's and post-graduate certificate in dance and choreography. He has been teaching, choreographing and performing for over 50 years. The City of Los Angeles and Viver Brasil celebrated his 50 years of dedication as a Mestre [Master Teacher] of Afro-Brazilian dance when he was in residence in Los Angeles in 2002. Since Viver Brasil's founding, Mestre King served as artistic advisor to Viver Brasil.
He first came to the West Coast in 1994 to teach at Brazil Week at Stanford University. In 2002, King was honored by the Black College Dance Exchange held at FAMU for his contribution to the field of African diasporic dance and awarded an Alliance for California Traditional Arts Mentorship Grant to work with Viver Brasil. Between 1995 -2002, he taught at UCLA, Florida International University, Lula Washington Dance Theatre, and the Dance Collective in Leimert Park/LA. On the East Coast, he taught at New York University and Brooklyn College for Jelon Vieira’s Dance Brazil in the early 1990s.
While studying at UFBA Mestre King began experimenting with traditional Afro-Brazilian dance and North American modern dance forms. Mestre King taught at the Serviço Social do Comercio (SESC) for most of his professional career where he developed the most recognized performing arts program which later became the center for Afro-Brazilian dance, music and performance studies. Inspired by the creative possibilities of fusing Afro-Brazilian dance forms with his students at SESC, Mestre King coined a new form of Afro-Brazilian contemporary dance, Dança Afro. His commitment to teaching to the youth community in Bahia was his most extraordinary contribution; uplifting the lives of hundreds and hundreds of dance and music students in Bahia and beyond. His legacy lives on throughout the world.

Performance Spotlight- Agô Ayó/Spirits Rising

|
Performance Spotlight
This week’s Performance Spotlight is Agô Ayó’s/Spirits Rising is from our beloved 20th anniversary show. As the many waters receded, the elements descended the Great Chain of Life,
forged by the Orixa of iron, Ogum, so that Earth could rise to meet the cosmos. Thus, the Orixás came to populate and guide the world. Choreographer and dear VB collaborator, Rosangela
Silvestre offered a brilliant choreography for this primordial tale.
Dancer: Laila Abdullah

#VoiceMoneyTimeOrTalent - SoLA Food Co-op
|
|
This week's #VoiceMoneyTimeOrTalent entry is SoLA Food Co-op
This week's #VoiceMoneyTimeOrTalent entry is SoLA Food Co-op. SoLA Food Co-op is still being created, but their goal is to "create a source for natural, organic, non-GMO food in South Los Angeles." They feel strongly about being a true co-op because then the organization is owned by the local community, with its purpose to serve the owners rather than a corporation: "because we’re truly local, owning a piece of your co-op is really about owning a piece of your community". Co-ops also make sure the money, time, and talent of the community, stay within the community, benefiting themselves directly. If you live in South LA, please consider donating your #time or #talent to become a part of this co-op. For everyone else, please consider donating your #money to get this co-op in full swing! More about the organization: Mission: Provide South Los Angeles and neighboring communities with access to fresh, economical, organic and healthy foods. Empower the community through shared ownership, improved health, education and social engagement. Practice sustainability, fair trade, fair labor, and supporting local agriculture.
